Upper back pain. Lower back pain. Neck pain. Sports injury. Trouble sleeping. Reduced mobility. Too much sitting at a desk or hunched over a device. There are numerous reasons why people seek care from a chiropractor. And each individual will have different care requirements, making it difficult to give a definitive answer to the question, ‘How often should I be visiting a chiropractor?’. One thing, however, should be noted:

There is no such thing as being adjusted ‘too often’ or ‘too soon’.

Chiropractic patients should consult with their practitioner to establish a personalised care regime, BUT regular chiropractic visits are beneficial for ALL patients.

Visiting a Chiropractor

Chiropractic care focuses on the proper alignment of the musculoskeletal system. Your Chiropractor will use spinal adjustments, massage and other techniques to help alleviate tension and promote healing in the body. The number of Chiropractic appointments and the frequency will depend upon the reason for your visit. As well as the Chiropractor’s diagnosis of your injury or pain and your current lifestyle and health status.

Visiting a Chiropractor for pain or a specific injury

Often when people first think of visiting a Chiropractor, it is for pain that ‘cannot be ignored’. Symptoms resulting from spinal misalignment or injury can include upper or lower back pain, neck pain, headaches or migraines, mobility challenges and disordered sleep. Chiropractic care can assist to relieve these issues using safe and gentle low-force techniques to bring the body back to proper alignment and joint function, working with the body’s own natural healing capabilities. Your body wants to be in alignment – your Chiro just assists in getting it there!

Visiting a Chiropractor for maintenance sessions

Individuals who have had pain treatment can benefit from Chiropractic maintenance. Healing is, of course, an ongoing process, and regular adjustments may help to support and accelerate that process. Furthermore, regular Chiropractic care can help to make sure the body is functioning optimally, avoiding relapse to previous painful symptoms or the possibility of recurring injuries. Regular maintenance sessions ensure that progress is ongoing and that good musculoskeletal health is preserved.

Visiting a Chiropractor for pain prevention

You don’t have to experience pain to visit a Chiropractor. Or you could be vaguely aware that pain is on the horizon if you don’t do something about it now. Whether you’re sitting at a desk, employed in manual labour, or practising as an elite athlete, you can benefit from Chiropractic adjustments. Remembering, of course, that discomfort can arise just as easily from inactivity as well as from overactivity.

How many chiropractic appointments and how often?

As has been noted, seeking care from a Chiropractor is different for every patient. For individuals seeking care for chronic pain or a specific injury, the first few sessions are usually dedicated to assessing and treating the pain. Patients needing urgent care for chronic or intense pain may require these sessions two to three times a week. Afterwards, they can then be reduced to, for instance, one session a week for the next month.

For patients coming back for maintenance care or seeking preventative care, visits may be just once or twice a month. Visits may be scheduled even further apart if complemented by other wellness maintenance practices.

A full treatment plan may take about nine to twelve sessions. However, your Chiropractor may recommend fewer or more visits depending on their diagnosis of your injury or pain and your individual requirements to ensure your ongoing neuro-musculoskeletal health.
